Top 10 Transfer Window Moves

After the excitement of the final few hours leading up to the closure of the transfer window on the 31st of August, one of the most controversial rules in football has presented supporters with exciting new signings to watch in the coming weeks.

With over 100 moves made in total involving English clubs during the final three flurried days of August we take a look at some of the best wheelings and dealings made before the window slammed firmly shut for three months.

10. Ashley Cole (From Arsenal to Chelsea)

With August the 31st bringing an end to one of the longest transfer sagas in history, England left back Ashley Cole jumped across London to join Champions Chelsea, just 18 months after being fined for secret meetings with Jose Mourinho and Peter Kenyon. With Cole vowing never again to pull on the Gunners shirt, Chelsea moved in to seal a deadline day move for the defender. With Arsenal holding out for big money Chelsea finally caved in and exchanged cash and a player for what Mourinho sees as the final piece in his blues jigsaw. Despite all the drama the cash laden blues have signed themselves a mighty good player.

9. Antoine Sibierski (Manchester City to Newcastle)

After finding themselves with three new strikers signed during the transfer window Glen Roeder obviously felt it necessary to bring in someone who could set up chances for his new attacking line. Not only has he found the perfect man for the job but he's also got himself a player who's no stranger to netting the odd goal himself. With Parker and Butt holding up the defensive end the Frenchman will be allowed to play just behind the strikers. Strong in the air and experienced at the top level the midfielder come striker will make a welcome addition to the Geordies squad.

8. Andy Cole (Manchester City to Portsmouth)

One of the premier strikers of the modern era Andy Cole brings a team goals as well as the ability to play as a link man to another forward. The latest stop of Cole's career will see him playing for Harry Redknapp's south coast army after signing for half a million pounds just before the deadline. Yet more experience for a Pompey side full of cash Cole will almost certainly become a firm favourite with the fans as he has done at Fulham, Bristol, Manchester United, Newcastle and former club Man City.

7. Dwight Yorke (Sidney FC to Sunderland)

Undoubtedly the busiest and newest member of the management aristocracy, Roy Keane had precious few days never mind weeks to line up transfer targets after agreeing to become the new Sunderland boss on Monday. With Sunderland winning only one of their five games this season Keane decided to bring in some experience and signed former united team mate Dwight Yorke from Australian side Sydney FC. After impressing as a biting midfield challenger Yorke will add versatility to a Sunderland side stuck in a rut.

6. Steed Marlbranque (Fulham to Tottenham)

No surprise to see the flying Frenchman leaving Craven Cottage after falling out of favour and seemingly out of love with the club and the manager, few predicted where Marlbranque would be ending up. With interest from West Ham and Bolton ended, Tottenham stepped in to rescue the player recognized as the one outstanding player of outstanding talent in the Fulham line up. Offering options as a right or central midfielder the vision of Marlbranque will be welcomed by strikers currently short on confidence and goals.

5. Rudolph Douala (Sporting Lisbon to Portsmouth)

Linked with a move to Middlesbrough last season the talented midfielder sealed a highly unexpected loan move to the South Coast just hours before the deadline. After impressing in Lisbon's run in the UEFA Cup in 2005 the quick and pacey midfielder unsurprisingly attracted attention from top clubs across several continents. Still of a young age Portsmouth's strength in depth will be added to as will their creativity and flair.

4. Da Marcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven to Manchester City)

Bringing cheer to the City fans after seeing several of their players exit the club in the Summer months, Da Marcus Beasley will be a welcome addition to a young and exciting squad. An outstanding performer in the 2002 World Cup Beasley's chances at PSV have been limited and at the age of 23 the pacey winger will be hoping to add to his resume with some impressive performance in the Premiership. His ability on the ball and close control are excellent the US international possesses all the attributes of a top quality signing.

3. Jonathan Woodgate (Real Madrid to Middlesbrough)

In yet another excellent loan signing, 'Boro manager Southgate has finally found the player he was looking for, a replacement for himself. With a wealth of experience, Woodgate's abilities are known and if he can stay fit there is no way that his close proximity to the England manager can be ignored. The defender's fitness however remains a doubt after two injury plagued years at ‘Los Galactico's'. Seemingly older and wiser Woodgate will be looking to nail down a place not only in the heart of Middlesbrough's defense but also one in the defense of his counties.

2. William Gallas (Chelsea to Arsenal)

Moving from rival to rival in the Ashley Cole deal, William Gallas will bring a fresh approach to defending for his new club. Struggling defensively because of a lack of experience the 28 year old Frenchman brings not only ability and stability but versatility to the Gunners backline. Whether Arsenal wanted to get more money for Cole or not they have certainly got themselves on capable replacement who will give nothing but 100%.

1. Carlitos Tevez and Javier Mascherano (Both Corinthians to West Ham)

In one of the biggest signings in Premiership history, West Ham seemingly pulled off the coup of the summer by attracting two Argentinean World Cup superstars to Upton Park. Forget the rumours that their stay at the Hammers may only be temporary, however long they wear the Claret and blue they will be recognized as top players in a team full of potential. Holding midfielder Mascherano had been seen as the perfect replacement for Roy Keane in the Manchester United team but will now form a potentially excellent partnership with the energetic Reo-Coker. Striker Tevez has the ability to score goals from nothing and has long been linked with a move to Chelsea or Manchester United. His pace is electric and with him he brings flair and is almost certain to be immediately adaptable to the Premiership. In the shop window perhaps but excellent signings all the same.
