Brentford manager Terry Butcher used Thursday's friendly against Staines Town to examine a number of new trialists.

The Bees were held to a 1-1 draw by the non-league outfit, but Butcher used the game to field trialists Donnie Barnard, Ricky Shakes, Gary Smith, Sebastien Kneissl and Kevin Smith.

Barnard is hoping to impress Butcher after the defender previously spent six years at Leyton Orient, while 22-year-old midfielder Shakes is seeking a new deal at Griffin Park after being released by Swindon in May.

Smith, who was recently released by Brentford's League Two rivals MK Dons, and former Chelsea midfield trainee Kneissl are also both keen to secure a new club.

New signings Simon Brown, John Mackie, Alan Connell and Lee Thorpe were also in action.

Goalkeeper Brown recently made a free switch to Brentford from Hibernian, while Mackie and Connell made moves from Leyton Orient and Hereford respectively.

Butcher will have been especially pleased to see Kneissl create the Bees' first goal for new attacking recruit Thorpe, who recently joined the club as a free agent, after just four minutes.
