The week that was...16th - 22nd May

Monday's playoff defeat seems like an eternity ago, however like Ipswich, Derby, Tranmere and all the other semifinal's defeated sides we must go back to the drawing board if we want to gain promotion during next season.

It is important to remember how far the Bees have come this season, struggling in the depths of League One last year Brentford rose like a salmon this year and gained a highly impressive fourth place. Under the guidance of Martin Allen we have improved as a team but there are still weaknesses in this side which need to be ironed out if we want to become challengers again next year.

As so often with underdogs our opponents underestimated exactly what we could do and this shocked many sides, especially at the tight Griffin Park where we defeated all top three sides however way from home Brentford looked just a little bit short of quality and once our rivals started passing the ball around then we seemed to have no response to this, things seemed to get worse however when the Bees employed this tactic combined with an inability to start well Brentford struggled in several games at midtabled clubs when this happened.

As for next season the signs look good, if we can hold onto the main components of what make us tick then it could be another sucessful season for the Bees possibly promotion however the warning I would give to the club is that this time you will be taken seriously so victories will be significantly harder to come by against teams we've faced this season, they know exactly what to expect against the stripes next year and they are sure to be ready for it.

It's important that we strengthen next year in attacking areas, if Martin Allen can bring in a 'hotshot' goal scorer or a creative midfield player then i think we will be better for it as at the back we look solid but lack ideas when coming forward, so the message from the fans is more of the same please Mr Allen!
