Brentford vs Yeovil - The fanzone view

The first League Tuesday evening game involving Brentford and I have a hunch it won't be the last took place tonight against Yeovil. This was the first meeting of the sides in the League with their last meeting over 10 years ago in the FA Cup. Brentford were unchanged from the side that drew at Oldham on Saturday. Yeovil brought in Matt Harrold who was starting against his former club. The game was a memorable one for the Sodje family as both Sam and Efe Sodje were both playing.

Brentford started the stronger and were given a 1-0 lead after 6 minutes when Nathan Jones put the ball into his own goal. It looked as if Chris Weale had made a drastic error but whoever could be deemed to be at fault it still gave Brentford a 1-0 lead.

Brentford pushed forward looking for a second and got the goal after 12 minutes of play. Darren Pratley knocked the ball to Jay Tabb who managed to burst through the defence and slammed the ball into the back of the net to send Brentford 2-0 up.

Yeovil, after a nightmare opening 15 minutes, gradually came back into the game. Paul Terry, brother of John Terry, unleashed a shot from 25 yards but Stuart Nelson was equal to it.

Yeovil made their pressure count on 38 minutes. A Lee Johnson free kick, origanally blocked by Ricky Newman, came to Matt Harrold and he was able to slot home into the bottom right hand corner. That made it 3 ex-Bees who have come back to score against us. Deon Burton for Rotherham, Leo Roget for Oxford and now Harrold for Yeovil.

Andrew Frampton's game was over on 41 minutes as he was withdrawn, because of injury, and was replaced by Sam Tillen. Yeovil tried to grab an equaliser before half time but Stuart Nelson was having none of it. The two teams went into half time with the Bees leading by 2 goals to 1.

The second half started quite evenly with both teams looking to keep it tight in defence and go for goals when they could. On 60 minutes Brentford produced a wonderful counter-attack to put DJ Campbell through on goal. However, the keeper, Chris Weale brought him down just outside the area. The referee, Andy D'Urso had very little option but to send Weale off. Yeovil were forced to take Kevin Gall off and he was replaced by number 2 keeper Stephen Collis. From the resulting free kick Collis was able to deal with comfortably.

Yeovil were under increasing pressure and Lloyd Owusu was put through on goal. As Collis came out Owusu slid in looking to get the ball into the back of the net but his momentum took him into the keeper. There was no intent involved so he got away with only a yellow card.

Yeovil got their equaliser through Lee Johnson. Sam Sodje fouled Chris Cohen and from 20 to 25 yards out Johnson rammed home the ball into the bottom corner which Nelson couldn't do anything about.

Brentford responded by bringing on Isaiah Rankin for Paul Brooker and went looking for their 3rd goal. Yeovil, who looked to be happy with a point, made a double substitution 7 minutes later with Chris Cohen and Matt Harrold, who left to a mixture of applause and boos from the Brentford fans, off and brought on Andy Lindegaard and Pablo Bastianini respectively.

Yeovil nearly grabbed a probable winner through Kevin Gall but Stuart Nelson produced a brilliant save to deny him. Brentford kept on pressing for the winner and Brook Road urged them on as hard as they could. In the 88th minute Brentford had a winner. Sam Tillen crossed the ball in and Michael Turner chested the ball down and on the volley rifled it into the bottom left hand corner of the net and Brook Road went absolutely wild with delight with that effort and Michael Turner certainly enjoyed that goal.

Yeovil, try as they might, could not grab themselves a late equaliser and Brentford took the win and all three points home with them tonight and a perfect way to set themselves up for the visit of Chesterfield on Saturday.
