Allen still quiet on Brentford departure

An unusual silence haunts the connection between the Brentford fans and their manager at the moment.

Usually first to dampen speculation and media talk around his position, Martin Allen has not said a word since a meeting of staff last week which presumably denied him the extra funds which he felt he needed to take the club forward.

News surrounding the manager has said alot about Allen, with the main focus on the playing budget it is believed that Allen is unhappy with many of the goings on behind the scenes at Griffin Park and still feels bitter about the clubs decision to sell DJ Campbell, a move which Allen believes cost them their chances of promotion.

Though it is believed that Allen will have no shortage of offers, his next destination is somewhat unclear, Ipswich, Preston, Crystal Palace and Stoke of the Championship are all looking for managers whilst Allen could be tempted to move across London to Charlton or to Middlesbrough if offers came in for him.

Unlike Allen however Greg Dyke has spoken to the press about this very confusing situation, claiming their was no other way to solve the recent problems other than to let Martin have his wish and leave,

"I was disapointed that we made major efforts to keep the playign budget at the same level as last season but it was not enough for Martin"

"We could not afford to risk any more money after raising an extra £200,000 to prevent us having to decrease our budget."

The chairman also stated,

"Brentford would have lost £1.5million this year but for their FA Cup run and transfer money, including the sale of DJ Campbell. So the idea we could increase the playing budget was not on.

"After this was explained to Allen he verbally resigned on Tuesday night. He let it be known to the media that he was leaving and that his agent was talking to Tranmere, but Brentford kept their fans in the dark.

"They simply issued the briefest of statements on their website saying that further to mounting speculation in the media, the club wished to emphasise that Allen was under contract to them for a further 12 months."

As previously speculated, Allen did initially want to stay to see out his contract and have one last crack at gaining promotion.

"It is now clear that Martin is determined to leave and you can't keep a manager who wants to go. He has still not put anything in writing, but told us he wanted to quit a couple of weeks ago, seemed to change his mind and then resigned on Tuesday.

"We have now given Tranmere permission to talk to Martin subject to them paying us compensation for the remaining year of his contract. As his contract states that he must give us three months' notice, we could have stopped him working for the next three months, but it is not worth it. We had been reasonable by giving him permission to talk to other clubs previously."

The Staines Guardian reports that Brentford will recieve full compensation for Allen however nothing for his assistants at the club who did not sign contracts and are now free to join him at any club he goes to. The pair (Damien Doyle and Adrian Whitbread) did not renew their deals as the club requested, presumably knowing that Allen was leaving.

This has left the club in an awful state as the club is currently relying on Chief Scout John Griffin, recently returned from illness to keep things moving till a new manager can be appointed. This includes the day to day running of the club and also dealing with transfers, as eight players have been released it is difficult to see Brentford not making a quick appointment to ensure that a season of woe does not ensue.

Griffin said to the press,

"I will keep things ticking over until a new manager is appointed."
