Carlisle United made history for all the wrong reasons back in the 2003/04 season when they became the first football club to have competed in all 5 main divisions following their relegation to the conference. They bounced straight back to League 2 the following season and wrapped up something of a miracle comeback by not only securing the League 2 Championship, but also finishing as runners-up in the Football League Trophy.

Building on the success of the 2005/06 season, United finished strongly in their first season back in League 1, a comfortable 8th place setting the benchmark for a play-off place the following season. Sadly, Carlisle were beaten 3-2 overall by Leeds United in the 2007/08 play-off semi-finals and struggled last season, finishing a disappointing 20th place in League 1, narrowly avoiding relegation.

Graham: Gone
With last season's 15 goal top scorer Danny Graham now departed, it might be just the right time for Brentford to sting their hosts on August 8th 2009.

Brentford were held to a 0-0 draw at Griffin Park the last time the Cumbrian's played the Bees, following a 2-0 defeat for the Bees earlier in the season at Brunton Park, in what was Brentford's own season of discontent which resulted in the 2006/07 relegation to League 2.

Overall the Bees have played the Cumbrians 22 times, winning 6, drawing 7 and losing 9. Brentford thrashed Carlisle 6-1 in the 1964/65 season christmas week, while Bees's worst result against United was a 3-0 defeat at Griffin Park in the 1979/80 season.

With the strong possibility that both teams will change somewhat before the kick off on August 8th making a prediction is merely guessing games, but based on current stats I think Brentford should walk away from Brunton Park Stadium with at least a point, if not all three……..U Bees!
