Brentford admit defeat in pursuit of Monaco-bound Vanderson

Brentford have failed in their attempts to sign Vanderson, 90min understands, with the Gremio right-back now expected to join Monaco in the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old Brazilian had been of interest to the Bees for some time and came close to agreeing a deal for him in the summer, and 90min reported last week that the west London club were confident of completing a deal in early 2022.

However, Brentford have confirmed that they have missed out on a deal for Vanderson and he will head elsewhere in Europe when the window officially opens.

Brentford's analytic and scouting teams believe South America has emerged as one of the best value-for-money markets, hence the heavy pursuit of Vanderson.

The Bees still hope to bring in a number of reinforcements next month, with up to five players expected through the doors at the Brentford Community Stadium. But missing out on Vanderson is a blow to their plans.

There have been reports linking Brentford with a move for Braga left-back Francisco Moura, though 90min understands that while they have watched the Portugal youth international, he is not someone they are targeting in January.

Highly rated Malmo centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic has also been linked with Brentford but it's our understanding that the majority of interest coming from England in the defender is from Championship clubs.

Thomas Frank's side have been decimated by a recent Covid-19 outbreak at the club, which saw last weekend's trip to Southampton called off.

When they return to action, star striker Ivan Toney will be available for selection again after testing positive, while centre-back Ethan Pinnock may also feature following a period of isolation.
