Last updated : 20 June 2003 By
Brentford have, unsurprisingly, been asked to travel on the opening day of the new 2003/04 Nationwide Second Division season after the fixtures were released earlier this morning.

Prenton Park, home of Tranmere Rovers, will be the port of call this time for the Bees, the fifth year in succession they have been given an away game to begin their season, following recent first day starts at Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, Northampton Town and Bristol Rovers respectively.

The season commences on Saturday 9th August 2003, with Brentford opening their home league programme seven days later against Peterborough United, ironically the side the Bees entertained in the final game of the last campaign.

Coppell: Returns to Griffin Park on Oct 21
One eagerly anticipated fixture that stands out in the list takes place on the evening of Tuesday 21st October, when ex-manager Steve Coppell, brings his Brighton & Hove Albion side to Griffin Park.

Other highlights include the trip to Loftus Road to play fierce rivals Queens Park Rangers on Saturday 11th October, with the home return fixture scheduled for Valentines Day, Saturday 14th February. Meanwhile, the Bees will entertain ex-Premiership club, Sheffield Wednesday on the first Saturday in October the 4th.

The festive programme sees Brentford receive Bristol City at home on Boxing Day, before travelling west to take on Plymouth Argyle two days later.

There are no fixtures scheduled for New Years Day.

Nene Park: Home of Rushden & Diamonds
Elsewhere, Brentford visit Nene Park, home of Nationwide Third Division Champions Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday 13th September in the first ever competitive fixture between the two clubs, with the Bees hosting the Northamptonshire club on Saturday 20th March.
