Clark said: "Lionel needs to be playing first-team football at a good level and the move suits both parties.
"His move echoes Nathan Eccleston's in that the intention was always to make the move season-long, but we needed to get the paperwork through to make him eligible for the weekend."
Ainsworth was signed for an undisclosed fee from Watford in January 2009 but has failed to hold down a regular starting place at the Galpharm Stadium.
