League confirms spending on agents increases

Disturbing reports within the Football League today suggested that clubs within the structure had spent over 6million pounds on agents fees this season. That is a rise of almost 2million on the same period last year.

Largely relating to Championship clubs Southampton were the biggest spenders shelling out nearly 900,000 pounds. League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said,

"We understood the culture of paying agents would take tieme to reverse. These figures underline that reality."

The BBC Website states,

Football League clubs took part in 2,034 "player transactions" from 1 July to 31 December 2006, up from 1,765 for the same period last year.

They committed to pay agents in 24% of these transactions.

A total of £6.214m went to agents, with 88% of this being spent by Championship clubs, 8% by League One sides and 4% by League Two.
