Scott McDonald, the young striker who played the last 30 minutes of Brentford's disappointing 2-0 defeat at Yeovil at the weekend, has been given an extended opportunity to stake a claim for a permanent contract by Bees' manager, Wally Downes.

The 19-year-old Australian, released by FA Barclaycard Premiership side, Southampton at the end of last season, had loan spells at Nationwide League clubs, Huddersfield Town and AFC Bournemouth during the 2002/03 campaign.

The youngster has also represented his country at Under 20 level.
