Brentford had taken the lead in the 17th minute when Charlie MacDonald chested down Mark Phillips' cross before lashing into the roof of the net, but Nicholls equalised following some clever footwork in the box from Darren Byfield.
"I thought we were comfortable at half-time and should have come out of the game with at least a point," said Scott.
"This is not an easy place to come but we did very well in the first half and I was very confident then that we could win the game.
"But I knew what Walsall could do because we have played them three times now this season. But we played into their hands. We know we have the ability to beat most teams in this league."
