Jagielka: Secured win for the U21's
England U21's defeat their Slovak counterparts 2-0 at Sunderland's impressive Stadium of Light ground.

A rather uninspiring display by David Platt's team resulted in few clear-cut chances and it took an own goal from the Slovak's Peter Dolezaj to give the hosts a half time advantage.

The second half followed much the pattern of the first, save for a fine effort by Arsenal's Jermaine Pennant, before Sheffield United's Phil Jagielka netted England's second, with a close range header on 83 minutes.

The result leaves England six points behind leaders, Turkey, who completed a 3-0 home victory over Macedonia 3-0.

Meanwhile, Barcelona agree a deal of around £25 million with Manchester United to take England captain, David Beckham to the spanish city - conditional on terms being agreed with Beckham and the election of Joan Laporta as the new Barcelona president this coming Sunday.

Owen: Match winner
England defeat Slovakia 2-1 at Middlesbrough's Riverside stadium in a European Group Seven Championship qualifier.

A second half brace from Liverpool's prolific striker, Michael Owen, in his 50th international, the first after a dubiously awarded penalty, the second a peach of a header from a pin-point Steven Gerrard cross, cancels out a first half effort from the Slovak's Vladimir Janocko, to ensure England stay firmly in sight of group leaders Turkey, who defeated FYR Macedonia 3-2 in a thriller in Instanbul.
