Brentford's caretaker boss Garry Thompson was delighted to grab a point, with his relegation-haunted side showing a commitment missing in recent weeks.

They found themselves up against a strangely lethargic Blackpool outfit with some of the Seasiders seemingly more worried about Sunday's LDV Vans Trophy Final in Cardiff.

Many failed to respond to manager Steve McMahon's pre-match challenge to go out and get themselves picked for the Millennium Stadium showpiece.

McMahon was scathing about their performance, stating: "As far as I am concerned that was a null and void game. It had no quality and watching it was like seeing paint dry, I was bored out of my mind.

"Brentford did exactly what I thought they would. They came and scrapped it out. They made life difficult and we couldn't find a way around it apart from the goal." Brentford manager Thompson said: "I would have been satisfied with one point prior to the kick-off but we had them in such a tangle with our set pieces and we hit the bar twice, I really feel we should have had three." Thompson was dismissed from the dug out with five minutes to go when he became angry over the booking of Stephen Hunt and he was reported by the fourth official for leaving the designated area too many times.

Thompson added, "I think the fourth official grassed me up to the referee. I must have gone out of the area once too often for him." Brentford went ahead in the 17th minute when star player Hunt was put through only to find his path blocked by home keeper Lee Jones. Jones appeared to touch his legs although Hunt's dive was a little late.

The referee consulted with his assistant before giving the spot-kick, which Hunt converted with ease.

Heavy rain made conditions very difficult and Blackpool did not help their cause by continually pumping the ball aimlessly into the air. They also found themselves quickly forced into trouble by Brentford's no nonsense physical approach.

The substitution of youngster Matt Blinkhorn with the experienced Mike Sheron finally put some life into the Seasiders. Sheron's astute pass set free Martin Bullock and his equally shrewd throughball set Richie Wellens away and he clipped an equaliser past Alan Julian in the 53rd minute.

Blackpool had two lucky escapes in the Brentford pressure which followed. In the 56th minute Stuart Talbot crashed a scorching 30-yard volley against the Blackpool bar and with 15 minutes left on the clock substitute Kevin O'Connor clipped the bar with a well-judged chip.
