Blackpool Vs Brentford 19/3/02

In doing so they closed to within a point of the second place they are striving for.

Brentford lined up with an unchanged team from that which had battled to victory over Wycombe and started very positively. A short corner resulted in Paul Evans hitting the bar after only four minutes. The visitors also went close with a Ben Burgess header and a David Theobold volley inside the first ten minutes.

It came as no surprise when Martin Rowlands gave Brentford the lead on the quarter hour. Burgess fed the speedy midfielder after a mistake in the home midfield and he raced on unchallenged to fire low across the home keeper for his fifth of the season and fourth of the month.

Brentford extended their lead just seven minutes later with a goal of rare genius. Lloyd Owusu received a pass on his chest with his back to goal, turned and lashed in a dipping left foot volley from all of 25 yards. The applause he received from all parts of the ground was well deserved.

Blackpool began to come back into the game and tricky winger Paul Simpson was at the heart of their efforts. He forced Paul Smith into a low save and also caused problems with his wicked crosses as half time approached.

Just before the break Owusu failed to control a cross from Rowlands, which would almost certainly have resulted in a 3-0 lead and Brentford had to make do with a 2-0 half time cushion.

Blackpool made two half time changes bringing Murphy and Taylor for the ineffective Fenton and Walker but this attacking change was negated after only two minutes of the half. Rowlands found more space down the right and his inch perfect cross was headed beyond Pullen to give the Bees and unassailable 3-0 cushion.

Brentford poured forward looking for more goals, Steven Sidwell and Burgess both had efforts that went just wide while the ever dangerous Rowlands also saw an effort pass the post.

Murphy had a golden opportunity to bring Blackpool back into the game but miss-hit his shot when Smith was exposed.

The first booking of the night came on 65 minutes when Ian Hughes gave up trying to stop Owusu fairly and scythed him down. Blackpool’s third substitution followed with Collins replacing Parkinson.

Brentford made three substitutions late on with Boxall, Tabb and O’Conner replacing Rowlands, Stephen Hunt and Owusu.

Blackpool got a goal back with ten minutes remaining. The Brentford defence, marshalled brilliantly all night by Ivar Ingimarsson, was caught square and Taylor lobbed the ball over the onrushing Smith to give the Seasiders hope. They should have made it 3-2 just minutes later when Taylor this time put his lob wide from a similar situation on the opposite side of the area.

There were to be no further alarms for The Bees and they collected the 3 points with ease. A hard fixture had turned out to be a stroll for Brentford and perhaps they should have score more and had a more convincing margin of victory but all that matters was the points and with a month of the season to go Brentford have a realistic chance of promotion.
