Alex Rhodes scored a fairytale first ever professional goal to save Brentford from relegation with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Rhodes, 22, came off the bench to keep Brentford in the second division with a goal in the 84th minute of only his third ever appearance.

The striker's stunning first touch from a Michael Dobson pass allowed him to stride into the penalty area and stroke home a shot left-footed from ten yards.

It was a special moment for cash-strapped Brentford, who have lost only once in ten games since the appointment of new manager Martin Allen.

And it was equally sweet for the home supporters because Brentford were only able to buy Rhodes from non-league Newmarket Town following a £7,500 donation from fans group Lifeline.

"It was Alex's first ever goal and I am absolutely thrilled that he got it because it was a brilliant first touch and a brilliant finish," said Allen.

"This has been a special day and it is the greatest achievement of my career, there's no doubt about that. It beats anything I did as a player.

"These memories will stay with me for a long time and it's been an unbelievable seven weeks.

"The players and the fans at this club have responded magnificently in the seven weeks or so I have been here and now I have to sit down and think about next season, because I came here to be successful not to worry about relegation each season.

"But for now we are enjoying the moment." Allen was cheered to the rafters at Griffin Park when his players performed a lap of honour after the final whistle. The Bees were second from bottom in the division when he arrived, but have won five of their last nine games.

Bournemouth had the better of a scrappy first half with Gareth O'Connor going close.

Brian Stock also struck a dipping volley narrowly wide but Brentford came strong in the final minutes and snatched victory with Rhodes' strike.
