Brentford came from behind to grab a 1-1 draw in the west London derby against QPR, thanks to an own goal from Paul Furlong.

Furlong had handed Rangers a first-half lead by hooking home in the 18th minute after his first effort was saved by goalkeeper Alan Julian.

But, in a scrappy and frenetic derby, Brentford deservedly clinched a draw seven minutes after the break when a Kevin O'Connor shot deflected off Furlong's shin and into the net.

The result leaves QPR hanging on desperately to second place, level on points with Bristol City who won at Peterborough.

It did not do much for Brentford's battle against relegation either, but it was the Bees fans who left Griffin Park happiest.

In a scrappy and disappointing first half the game was only enlivened by a highly controversial opener from QPR.

Steve Palmer's miss-hit shot reached Furlong, who was clearly two or three yards offside. But the linesman kept his flag down and although Bees keeper Julian made a fine save from the striker's initial shot, Furlong took advantage of sleepy defending to pounce on the rebound and hook home from six yards.

Brentford boss Wally Downes did not know whether to be angrier about the offside or his team's miserable defending.

But the home side didn't give up.

Ben May went very close from a Kevin O'Connor free-kick and then wasted another excellent opportunity when he could not connect with a Michael Dobson ball across the box.

May, on loan from Millwall, also shot wide when put clean through after 43 minutes but Brentford's luck changed after the break.

Kevin O'Connor's free-kick after 52 minutes came straight back to him – and his second effort struck Furlong to wrong-foot keeper Chris Day and end up in the net.

You would have expected QPR, who are gunning for promotion, to step up a gear after that. But they were unable to put any decent pressure on the home side and struggled to find their form.

In the end the match petered out into a tame draw, which does neither side any favours.

But it was Brentford who left the pitch happier and they could have won it when Stephen Hunt's header was only just tipped over the bar by Day.

The match was expected to be a fiery affair thanks to the return of Martin Rowlands, who ditched Brentford to sign for QPR last summer.

But in fact the winger barely touched the ball in a very quiet display and was well handled by the Bees defence.

Afterwards, QPR boss Ian Holloway refused to be downcast by the result, which means Bristol City have drawn level on points with Rangers in the race for promotion.

He said: "If you're asking me am I worried about Bristol City then 'oh yeah, I'm shaking in my boots.' "Look, you just want to be one of the three who goes up. And we're shaping up well.

"I have never seen anyone win anything by looking behind them, and the way I look at it we missed a chance to catch up with the team in first place today. I think we're doing very well." Brentford boss Downes knows his team are not in the same position – because the Bees are more worried about avoiding relegation.

And he was frustrated at not managing to snatch victory.

He said: "We never seen to be able to nick it against them and it's getting up my nose. I thought we had chances to win it this time but we didn't take them.

"We're desperate to win games. I keep telling the boys we're playing well and there's no need for any dramas. But we do need a victory or two."
