Brentford closed the gap on leaders Luton to just five points after a dramatic last-minute victory over Hartlepool Striker Deon Burton scored a thrilling 90th minute goal to keep second-placed Brentford's 100 per cent home record intact with a 2-1 triumph.

He thundered home a header from an Isaiah Rankin cross to leave the home fans ecstatic - and Hartlepool bewildered.

Earlier, the visitors had taken a 31st minute lead through a Matty Robson deflected cross, before Rankin forced home a Burton knock-back to make it 1-1.

Afterwards Brentford boss Martin Allen said he was delighted with his strikers, who both scored their fourth goals of the season.

But the Bees also had to thank keeper Stuart Nelson who produced a stunning 82nd minute save from Anthony Sweeney when the score was 1-1.

Hartlepool went home wondering just how on earth they had lost the game.

They went ahead when Robson's deep cross was deflected over keeper Nelson's head. It was either a piece of outrageous skill or pure fluke, but there was hardly time to enjoy it before Brentford hit back.

Kevin O'Connor swung over a free-kick after 35 minutes and when Burton knocked the ball back into the box, Rankin raced through a crowd of players to force the ball home.

In the second half Hartlepool had much of the play and were hugely unlucky not to go ahead.

Adam Boyd had one effort superbly tipped around the post by keeper Nelson and then another cleared off the line by Michael Turner.

But the best chance of victory for Hartlepool came with Sweeney's effort eight minutes from time - and his miss proved costly.
