Jo Kuffour's double snapped Brentford's 22-game run without a win at a rain-soaked Griffin Park.

After a shocking 4-1 capitulation at home the London rivals Millwall, Brentford had to show the home faithful their pride and determination to wear their shirt - and the Bees buzzed from the start taking the lead inside 90 seconds.

Nathan Abbey, who arrived on loan to alleviate Brentford's goalkeeping crisis, cleared long from a goal0kick. Calum Willock's flicked header split the Chesterfield defence and Kuffour lashed the ball home from 25 yards with his first touch leaving Barry Roche rooted to the spot.

Chesterfield's form has dipped since their Carling Cup exploits but they responded well to the initial set back as on 15 minutes the Spireites produced their best chance of the half.

Caleb Folan cut across the field evading three challenges. He squared to Paul Hall who left Simon Cox on the floor inside the box but found the side-netting with his low shot.

While Chesterfield had most of the first-half pressure, the Bees out-worked the visitors and had the better chances.

In the second half Spireites manager Roy McFarland had clearly explained to his players the first half wasn't good enough.

They came out with all guns blazing and would have equalised in the 58th minute but for a brilliant save from Abbey to deny Folan from eight yards.

Brentford made Chesterfield pay for their lack of guile on 67 minutes when Kuffour latched on to a Paul Brooker through-ball and buried his shot from the edge of the area into the bottom left corner.

Wayne Allison pulled a goal back from a Kevan Hurst free-kick but it was too little too late from a disappointing Chesterfield.
