Brentford moved out of the relegation zone in the second division with a nerve-wracking but thrilling 3-2 victory over Colchester.

The Bees made it five matches unbeaten under new manager Martin Allen to the delight of a cheering Griffin Park crowd.

It was also an eventful afternoon for madcap Allen, who was ordered into the stands by referee Joe Ross during a frantic period of injury time.

Allen had already been warned by referee Ross for his pitch-side antics, when he kicked away a ball as Colchester desperately searched for an injury-time equaliser.

Thankfully for the Bees it never came and they continued their bid to beat the drop with a stunning victory.

Goals from Jay Tabb, Ibrahima Sonko and Matt Harrold had the Griffin Park crowd on their feet and although Colchester replied with strikes from Alan White and Craig Fagan it was not enough for the visitors.

So the only low point for the Bees was Allen's sending-off.

"I kicked the ball away so I deserved it," he said. "I will have to fine myself and give myself a smack on the wrist. I will also apologise to the referee.

"But thank goodness we won! It was a great result and a great performance. The players worked extremely hard and they deserved it." Tabb put the Bees ahead right on the stroke of half-time of what turned out to be a nerve-wracking clash.

Sonko's long-throw was expertly headed across goal by substitute Ben May and Tabb flung himself at the far post to nod a glancing header into the corner of the net.

Colchester equalised with another long-throw routine after 54 minutes, which White drilled home at the far post.

But Sonko stabbed home his second goal in two games after 58 minutes and then Harrold took advantage of a terrible Wayne Brown back-pass to make it 3-1 in the 78th.

The Bees like to make life difficult for themselves, though. And another defensive cock-up allowed Fagan to chip home for the U's just two minutes later.

That set up a frantic finale, especially as Brentford had conceded a goal after six minutes of injury time against Sheffield Wednesday two days earlier.

But, with Allen kicking every ball and cheering every clearance from the sidelines, the home side hung on in dramatic fashion thanks to a late goal-line clearance from Sonko.
