Stephen Hunt scored two penalties and missed one as Brentford thrashed top-of-the-table Brighton 4-0.

Winger Hunt guided the Bees to a stunning victory at Griffin Park, scoring a penalty after only six minutes and adding another after 87.

Brentford's new wonderkid Jay Tabb also scored, along with Ben May as the home team stunned their opponents, who are leading the way in the Second Division.

It was particularly sweet for Hunt because he could have moved to Brighton when he was out of contract in the summer, but Albion pulled out when they found out he was under 24 and would therefore cost a fee.

The Seagulls were regretting that because Hunt, who signed a new contract for Brentford instead, ran them ragged.

He started the rout after six minutes when he was brought down by Danny Cullip and got up to score the penalty himself.

Impressive young striker Tabb finished off a fine move to score his fifth goal in a week after 36 minutes.

He turned home a Tony Rougier cross after a sweet spell of possession football from the hosts. It was his fifth goal in three games.

Brentford should have made it 3-0 after the break when Kevin O'Connor was crudely brought down by keeper Michel Kuipers, who escaped with only a yellow card.

But Hunt saw his second spot-kick of the match saved.

However Brentford were in no mood to lie down and quickly got the goal that clinched victory.

A corner from Hunt was headed back powerfully into the six-yard box by Ibrahima Sonko and May scrambled home from close range.

It was 4-0 in the 88th minute when Hunt was again brought down in the box, this time by Kerry Mayo, and was brave enough to grab the ball and fire home his second goal of the game.

"We weren't at the races," moaned Brighton caretaker boss Bob Booker afterwards. "We didn't do anything right and this was a major setback." But Bees boss Wally Downes was happier. He praised his team for pulling out top-notch performance, but proved he is a tough taskmaster by also giving Hunt a telling off.

He said: "Hunt did well, but I wasn't impressed by the second penalty. At 2-0 up against a top of the table side he should have just struck it hard, nothing fancy. He should know that and I've had a word.

"But he showed composure to score the third one and he was a danger all match. It was an excellent result for us."
