Grimsby hauled themselves out of the bottom four with a 1-0 win against relegation rivals Brentford thanks to a touch of class from striker Isaiah Rankin.

Young sub Graham Hockless chipped over a super cross from the left which was met by Rankin who placed a fine header past the outstanding Brentford keeper Stuart Nelson who had made several fine saves to keep his side in the game.

But with 20 minutes left there was still much defending for Grimsby to do and afterwards Mariners boss Nicky Law admitted it seemed like the goal had come at the start of the game.

Big Grimsby centre-half Tony Crane could of eased those nerves in the home camp when he side-footed wide of goal from a corner so Grimsby could not get the second goal that would of made their task that much easier.

After a bright start the Bees were pushed back by Grimsby, but in the second half the Londoners created one or two good chances which with better finishing would of been scored.

But, Grimsby keeper Alan Fettis had only one serious save to make going down to his left to turn aside a goal bound header early on from defender Ibrahim Sonko.

But once Grimsby settled down after conceding a few early free-kicks in dangerous areas they took the game to Brentford who were defending a seven match unbeaten run since Martin Allen joined them as manager.

It was a typical relegation clash in front of Grimsby's biggest crowd of the season - the majority went home happier although neither side know which league they will be playing in next season.

The win took Grimsby out of the bottom four and they travel to Tranmere on the last day of the season knowing that destiny is in their own hands.

Provided they match the result of Rushden and Chesterfield next week they will avoid a second relegation on the trot.
