Paul Smith

Brentford and Peterborough United ended the campaign with a point apiece, Andy Clarke netting for Posh, Steve Evans equalising for the Bees.

Brentford started brightly, Evans flashing a 25-yard strike just wide of the left hand upright for Brentford before Kevin O'Connor's saw a 20-yard effort defected for a corner.

At the other end on 12 minutes, a Sagi Burton cross to the far post was met by Gareth Jelleyman but his header was easily claimed by keeper Paul Smith.

On 23 minutes, the Posh had a let off when Michael Dobson's corner from the left clipped the right hand post before bouncing to safety.

Posh went close themselves a minute later, when Adam Newton's 20-yard left-foot strike was well saved by Smith. Smith was called into action again almost immediately as Clarke saw his effort from the edge of the box tipped over by the keeper.

Peterborough took the lead 12 minutes after the break when Clarke converted Newton's low cross from the right to the far post at close range.

Brentford equalised on 67 minutes when a low cross from substitute Jay Tabb was controlled well by Evans who fired home left-foot shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from 10 yards.

The Bees went close to taking all three points when on 71 minutes Mark Peters smashed an effort against the right-hand upright following good control in the box. The ball rebounded to Tabb who headed the rebound against the cross bar.

That was before in the dying moments Peters headed over Michael Dobson's cross from the right.

At the other end, Richard Scott fired a 30-yard free-kick just wide of the target.

So another season comes to an end, a campaign that started so promisingly for the Bees ended ultimately in 16th place and it remains to be seen whether manager Wally Downes can keep the majority of his squad in tact.

For Barry Fry’s Peterborough United , a good 11th place end gives plenty of room for optimism come next August.
