Notts. County 2 Brentford 0

Notts County produced some thrilling football to earn only their second home league win of the season and it should have been by a more convincing margin than 2-0.

Brentford were dangerous in the first few minutes, but Notts gradually assumed domination to lay siege to the Londoner's goal.

The difference between the side was surprising considering that Brentford were the in-form team going into the match and Notts had produced a rock bottom performance in losing at Grimsby midweek.

The secret was the way in which Notts dominated the midfield with inspiring performances from both Simon Baldry and Darren Caskey.

Baldry figured in both County goals - the first after 25 minutes. Clive Platt finished it off with a header inside Paul Smith's right hand post.

The best was yet to come from Notts, in the second half. Then Smith came in to his own with two spectacular saves. The first was to deflect a Caskey free kick round an upright, the second to keep out a Paul Heffernan snap shot.

As Notts continued to pile up the chances, central defender Tony Barras headed wide when well placed.

Not until stoppage time did Notts earn their due reward when Baldry slipped the ball to Caskey who blasted it home from the tightest of angles to make the score line more representative of the play.

Notts manager Bill Dearden said afterwards that the second half showing was County's best of the season and he paid tribute to the skill and new found appetite for the game of Caskey.
